The chairman of Sligo Borough Council's Joint Policing Committee has urged churches and schools in the Sligo area to look at the alternative of allowing children wear school uniforms at First Holy Communion and confirmations. Cllr Chris McManus made his comments during a discussion on the increasing problem of illegal money lending in Sligo Town and surrounding towns such as Tubbercurry and Ballymote.
The problem has become particularly poignant in recent times with a number of families unable to meet the interest payments on sums borrowed.
Speaking at the Borough Council meeting Cllr McManus said, “There are two particularly difficult times during the year, namely post Christmas and at communion and confirmation times.”
“This is certainly a case of trying 'oneupmanship' on those down the road at these times and perhaps churches and schools should look at the alternative of allowing kids wear school uniforms on these occasions.”
He added, “It would level the playing field and make it easier for everyone, particularly for those who find it extremely difficult to make ends meet.”
As of yet there has been no official response from the schools and churches in the area although it is believed that they are giving the matter consideration.
