A cause for the beatification of Father Walter Ciszek, a Pennsylvania
native who spent years as a prisoner of the Soviet regime, is moving
forward at the Vatican.
Msgr. Anthony Muntone, a postulator for the cause, told an audience in
Pennsylvania that the process is proceeding quietly, 26 years after
Father Ciszek’s death.
A Byzantine-rite Jesuit, Father Ciszek slipped into Russia in 1940 to
undertake a clandestine ministry, but was detected and imprisoned at the
notorious Lubyanka prison in Moscow, then exiled to Siberia, where he
remained until he was released in an exchange of prisoners in 1963.
He
is the author of With God in Russia.
