Papal nuncio in Spain: the Catholic Church is being persecuted over sexual abuse within the Church

Italian Archbishop and papal nuncio in Spain Renzo Fratini Monday said the Catholic Church is ,,being persecuted" over the many thousands of cases of child molestation that have become known the past decade.

In a speech at the Spanish Episcopal Conference Fratini Monday admitted that ,,unforgivable mistakes have been made" by members of the clergy, but that the character of the Catholic Church and its´ followers may not solely be determined by what has come to light the past few years with regard to sexual abuse within the Church.

Fratini highlighted there is continued need for ,,good, religious education and well prepared members of the clergy who are able to inculcate spiritual values, faith in Christ and love for the Church."

In order to achieve that Fratini said that the selection of those who are spiritually and intellectually able to perform this task is crucial, suggesting this screening process may not always have been performed to the degree necessary in the past.

Fratini´s declarations come just days after a teary-eyed pope Benedictus XVI asked for forgiveness on behalf of the Church to victims of sexual abuse during a visit to Malta.
