Vatican conference honors late Cardinal Casaroli, top Vatican diplomat

The Vatican Synod Hall was the setting for a June 10 conference marking the 10th anniversary of the death of Cardinal Agostino Casaroli.

Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the Secretary of State, headed the list of participants in the even honoring Cardinal Casaroli, who served as Secretary of State from 1979 to 1990.

Another former Secretary of State, Cardinal Angelo Sodano,had earlier presided at a memorial Mass for his predecessor.

Cardinal Casaroli was a renowned Vatican diplomat who served under 5 different Pontiffs.

He was known primarily for crafting a cautious Vatican policy of engagement with the nations of the Communist bloc, but he was intimately involved in negotiations with other nations as well.

Cardinal Francis Arinze told Vatican Radio that he could vividly recall the wise advice he received from Casaroli when civil war struck his native Nigeria.

Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev sent a message of appreciation to the June 10 conference, as did Italian President Giorgio Napolitano.

Gianna Letta, a top aide to Italian premier Silvio Berlusconi, participated in the discussions. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
