Two former Carmelite nuns who staged a high-profile demonstration outside St. Peter's Square on June 9 were justifiably expelled from their convent, according to the bishop of the diocese in which the convent is located.
Bishop Franceso Brugnaro of Camerino-San Severino Marche told reporters that he knew and understood the reasons why the two religious “were legitimately dismissed from the Carmelite nuns’ convent in January 2007.”
He declined to provide details.
The bishop issued his statement after the nuns attracted worldwide attention by chaining themselves to a lamp post just outside the Vatican before the Sunday public audience of Pope Benedict XVI.
They explained that they were staging the protest to call attention to what they said was unjust expulsion from their religious community. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
