The Roman Catholic bishop of the Belleville diocese plans to begin meeting privately this summer with the diocese's priests in hopes of smoothing communication.
Bishop Edward Braxton says in a letter to priests that the goal of the discussions is to improve dialogue and move beyond was has been contentious relations.
Dozens of the diocese's priests recently requested that Braxton step down, among other things citing the lack of communication.
The discussions will be coordinated by the Presbyteral Council. That's a priests' group that raised criticism of Braxton for misusing money donated to restricted funds and failing to meet with priests concerning other issues.
The diocese covers Illinois' 28 southernmost counties and has more than 100,000 Roman Catholics.
