Duca, who was a monsignor in Dallas prior to his appointment, is the second bishop of the Shreveport diocese, which oversees Catholic churches across North Louisiana.
"I want to make us have a sense of missionary work -- of reaching out to the poor, the needy, to the unchurched," Duca told hundreds of people during a Mass at the Shreveport Convention Center this afternoon.
"I also want to, hopefully, increase our vocations -- people that are called to ministry as priests, sisters."
Duca succeeds Bishop William Friend, who retired.
