Bishop John Arnold launched Catholic Community - a social networking site for Catholics at the end of last week.
Nick Layton, the director of CathCom, as it will be called, explained: "The site combines some of the best features from the best social networking sites on the internet."
He said that other elements Catholic Community include headline feeds, links to other Catholic sites, jobs and volunteer listing pages.
The site has recruited just under a thousand members so far, making it a minnow in the social networking field. But it intends to grow fast.
CathCom declares: "This community is open to everyone. It's a place where you can share your opinions whatever they are. Although this is a Catholic Community, you do not have to be a Catholic, know anything about the Catholic Church, or agree with it to feel welcome here. Every opinion is welcome as long as it is respectful of others."
