The Kosovo media has devoted a lot of attention to President Fatmir Sejdiu’s visit yesterday to Pope Benedict XVI.
The Pope showed extensive knowledge of the situation, events and decisions that Kosovo is about to make, said Sejdiu after his meeting with the head of the Roman Catholic Church.
“Obviously, during our conversation, I outlined to him the decisive moment facing us – the declaration of independence. I expect the Holy See to be one of the main supporters of independence,” said the Kosovo president.
Other than general diplomatic formalities however, the Vatican’s statement concerning the Pope’s meeting with Sejdiu, quoted by Priština media, did not reveal any hints as to the Vatican’s official position on the matter of Kosovo’s status.
Prime Minister Hashim Thaci said that Kosovo was prepared to be independent as early as today. Thaci repeated that Kosovo knew the independence date and that the citizens would duly be informed.
According to observers, events should begin gathering pace from Monday onwards.
