Pope thanks preacher for Lenten Retreat

As the annual Lenten Retreat for concluded at the Vatican on Saturday, February 16, Pope Benedict XVI thanked the preached, Cardinal Albert Vanhoye, for leading the spiritual exercises.

The Holy Father said that throughout the week-long spiritual exercises he had been thinking of the image of Jesus, kneeling before Peter to wash his feet. He saw that in "such an act of extreme humility, that Jesus' new priesthood was fulfilled."

St. Peter needed to listen to Jesus, to learn from Him "the mystery of His priesthood," the Pope continued.

He told Cardinal Vanhoye that in preaching the retreat he had "helped us to listen to the voice of the Lord, to re-learn the meaning of His priesthood and ours."

The Lenten Retreat, which had begun on February 10, concluded on Saturday.

The Pope and leaders of the Roman Curia canceled their regular schedules to attend the spiritual exercises, held in the Redemptoris Mater chapel of the apostolic palace. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
