An editorial in L'Osservatore Romano, charging that an Italian entertainer had needlessly inflamed public passions with critical remarks about the Pope at a May Day concert, has drawn a rebuke from Italian lawmakers.
A group of 28 members of the Italian parliament-- including members of the Green, Communist Refoundation, and Democratic Socialist parties-- joined in a public letter criticizing L'Osservatore Romano for what the writers saw as an intemperate reaction to criticism.
“The attack on the words of Andrea Rivera is very worrying," the lawmakers wrote.
L'Osservatore Romano had denounced Rivera for "vile attacks" on the Pope during a May Day concert in Rome.
The editorial said: "It is an act of terrorism to stoke blind and irrational rage against someone who always speaks in the name of love."
The Italian lawmakers took exception to the reference to terrorism, arguing that the Vatican newspaper had needlessly overreacted to Rivera.
"Threats and terrorism are things too serious to be confused with words," they wrote.
