Pope Leo XIV will not move into the Apostolic Palace alone

Pope Leo XIV will not move into his new flat in the Apostolic Palace alone.

The newspaper "La Repubblica" (Tuesday) reports on the new Pope's unofficial plans to live with a small community of Augustinians.

The US-born Pope was not only a member of this order for decades, but also led it as Prior General from 2001 to 2013.

"I will have to give up many things, my life has changed, but I will never stop being an Augustinian," he said at a lunch with Augustinians in Rome shortly after his election as Pope.

According to the report, three members of the order could move into the restored papal apartments in the Apostolic Palace with Leo XIV.

The renovation work in the flat where Benedict XVI last lived is still ongoing and should be completed by the end of September.

Until then, Leo XIV will continue to live in his flat in the Dicastery of the Faith building. He moved into this when his predecessor Francis brought him to Rome as head of the Vatican's episcopal dicastery.

Francis himself preferred to live in a flat in the Vatican guest house Santa Marta.

As a result, the rooms in the Apostolic Palace to the right of St Peter's Basilica had been empty for twelve years - with a corresponding backlog of renovation work.

Leo XIV bridged the waiting time for his move-in date with stays at the papal summer residence in Castel Gandolfo.
