"Modern scientists and writers are looking for something new and sensational, trying to prove their bold theories somehow they misinterpret the Gospels of the New Testament or neglect them, which resulted in fabrication of an entire army of pseudo Jesuses," head of the Synodal Department for External Church Relations Metropolitan Hilarion of Volokolamsk said on Monday at the opening of the Eastern European International Symposium on the New Testament Researchers in Moscow.
The hierarch pointed out that each year "Jesus's revolutionary biographies" appear at the bookstores, their authors make fantastic discoveries based not on new scientific data, but on their personal interests, tastes, sympathies, antipathies."
"Refusing to believe in Jesus, the way He was represented in the Gospels and preached by the Church all through the centuries, many scientists prefer to believe in myths they or their colleagues created themselves, turning them in dogmas. Life and teaching of Jesus is considered from the point of some philosophic guidelines or ideological presupposition," he said.
The metropolitan stressed that "science should not be turned into quackery."
