Singing priest’s house attacked

A member of holy singing trio The Priests has been targeted by thugs who attacked his Newtownards home last weekend.

Fr Martin O’Hagan, parish priest at St Patrick's Catholic Church, said he feels “unsettled” after youths smashed a ground floor window at the parochial house.

The incident happened in the early hours of Sunday morning. Police say they are treating it as a sectarian hate crime and an investigation is ongoing.

Speaking to the Community Telegraph, Fr O’Hagan recalled the ordeal. “I woke up to the sound of what sounded like stones bouncing off the window.

“I went outside, I couldn't see anyone, but heard voices. Then I heard the shattering of glass. It was quite loud.

“I looked out and could see a young fella, and one other fella hiding.

“Then I realised they had broken through the double glazed window.”

Fr O’Hagan revealed that this wasn’t the first time his home had been attacked — eggs have been thrown at the parochial house before.

But he fears this attack was “more sinister”.

“It’s very unsettling. I’m joining the ranks of so many other people who are victims of these rather reckless attacks.

“But these people do not represent the people of Newtownards and Comber. People are appalled by such behaviour.

“I hope those behind this realise the futility of it all — it serves no purpose whatsoever.”

Police are appealing for anyone with any information regarding |this incident to contact them at Newtownards on 0845 600 8000.
