Bishop ‘hoping for return of hope’ in 2010

The bishop of Ferns, Dr Denis Brennan has said that he hops to see “the return of hope itself” in 2010.

Speaking of his expectations for the New Year, he said this included hope that the year would bring blessings and care for loved ones and communities as well as for the country and the world generally.

Dr Brennan also said he looked forward to hope that the current financial difficulties that are besetting Ireland might show “early and sure signs of abating” and that people who have lost jobs might be given “an opportunity again to show what they can contribute.”

He said he would also like to see the most vulnerable in society being a “designated priority” as the hardship engendered by the recession takes its toll.

Turning to the recent clerical abuse scandals, the bishop said he hoped that 2010 would bring a “healing moment” to victims and that society generally would find a “way of working together to ensure that the failures of the past will never be repeated.”

Dr Brennan said that 2010 would also be a year of growth and renewal, of new marriages, births and careers. “In all of this hoping and looking forward, the Spirit of God asks us to make time for God and our neighbour, to share blessings and pains and to walk together,” he remarked.
