Churches to welcome back Darwin

‘Darwin Day’ will be celebrated on Back to Church Sunday this year, as a Christian charity release resources encouraging people to engage with the theological question behind a new biopic of the famed evolutionary scientist.

Creation, starring Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly, is released in the UK on September 25 this year, which has marked the bicentenary of Charles Darwin’s birth with a fierce debate over his legacy.

The Damaris Trust has created a range of free online resources encouraging churches to discuss issues raised in the film.

Trust spokesperson Nick Pollard said: “Darwin’s burial at Westminster Abbey highlights how many in the church recognised the value of the man and his work. It is unfortunate that others demonised Darwin by interpreting one part of his work in a certain way.

"The release of Creation provides an ideal opportunity to celebrate the breadth and depth of Darwin’s work, as well as appreciate the many personal struggles he faced. The film offers helpful insights as we all wrestle with the big questions of a complex and beautiful world, created by God.

"It is also Back to Church Sunday, when thousands of people will be invited to special services. Here's an opportunity to give them a reason to return to church- by showing how the Gospel is still relevant to the big issues of the day."

The resources, including film clips, video discussions, house group materials and ideas for special outreach events and themed church services are available from www.damaris.org/creationmovie . +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
