Catholic Bishop slams "same-sex" partnership law

The Catholic Church opposes the registered partnership of same-sex couples and objects to the Hungarian law which elevates partnerships to a similar level as marriage, a Church official said on Thursday.

Bishop Laszlo Biro, head of the family affairs committee of the Hungarian Catholic Bishops' Conference (MKPK), told reporters in Budapest that registered partnerships are "a dangerous attack on the family, which is a fundamental institution of society".

He argued that support of the family as an institution goes beyond church dogma and natural laws, and is protected by the Hungarian Constitution.

"The family is an exclusive communion of a man and a woman, useful for society, aimed at their common prosperity and passing on life," the bishop said.

Earlier this year Pope Benedict XVI praised visiting Hungarian bishops for mounting resistance to the law recognising the registered partnership of same-sex couples.
