Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor's nephew upholds family tradition

Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor will be stepping down as the leader of the Catholic church in England and Wales next year but the family name will remain at the helm of another institution in the country.

James Murphy-O’Connor, the cardinal’s 39-year-old nephew, has been appointed headmaster of the Catholic public school Prior Park College, Bath, of which His Eminence is the most famous alumnus.

“My father and all his five brothers went to the school,” said Murphy-O’Connor, whose father Jim, 83, is the eldest of the six and an ex-Ireland rugby international.

“He says Cormac has always taken a keen interest in his career but he clearly got the job on his merits.

“It was a thorough interview process and I’m delighted that I got the nod.”
