Missionaries 'inflaming tensions in Orissa'

FOREIGN missionaries have been blamed for helping to inflame religious conflict in the Indian state of Orissa.

The claim comes from the Rev Enos das Pradhan, general secretary of the Church of North India, said that such ‘aggressive evangelising’ was causing harm.

In an interview with the Ecumenical News Service he said that there were already deep divisions in society concerned with issues surrounding the conversion of Hindus to Christianity.

In addition, there were local grievances about the rights and benefits granted to Christian converts under the caste system.

But he added that the influx of missionaries from overseas, and also from South India, had worsened the situation.
