Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor of Westminster-- who raised eyebrows last December by saying that he feared Polish immigrants might be "creating a separate church in Britain"-- is attending this week's meeting of the Polish episcopal conference.
The English cardinal reassured his hosts that "Polish parishes will not be liquidated" in Great Britain.
He added that he recognized that "many Poles working in Great Britain will want to return to Poland and therefore want to pray in their own language."
However, the cardinal insisted on some degree of assimilation, saying that "Polish priests residing in England should speak our language fluently."
Cardinal Murphy-O'Connor is one of several prelates from other countries taking part in the Polish bishops' discussions, which are devoted to pastoral concerns for Polish Catholics living abroad.
The other foreign participants are Archbishop Tadeusz Kondrusiewicz of Belarus and Bishops Franciszek Lobkowicz of the Czech Republic, Konrad Zdarsa of Germany, Dominique Rey of France, and Leon Maly of Ukraine. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
