Archbishop Daniel Buechlein has led the Indianapolis Archdiocese since 1992.
Buechlein went through several tests last week.
Then, on Friday, doctors told him he has a form of lymphoma.
"I think he's still in good spirits and is hopeful about how this is going to work out. His oncologist has told him that Hodgkin's lymphoma or Hodgkin's disease can be treated effectively with chemotherapy, so that gives him a lot of hope," said Archdiocese spokesman Greg Otolski.
Buechlein plans to have more testing done including a full-body CT scan to figure out the full extent of the disease.
