Ecumenism is a movement of prayer, Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity president Cardinal Kasper said as the 100th Week of Prayer for Christian Unity concludes this week.Cardinal Kasper spoke on Vatican Radio announcing the theme of this last week Prayer Without Ceasing saying it “synthesises the entire ecumenical movement of the last 100 years."
The Week of Prayer ends on Friday, 25 January – the Feast of the conversion of St Paul. The day also marks the 100th anniversary of the inauguration of the Church Unity Octave.
"These 100 years have been very rich, under the action of the Holy Spirit," Cardinal Kasper said.
"This week of prayer has been very helpful because ecumenism is not our work, but is of the Holy Spirit, and without him it is impossible to have unity."
“Prayer for unity has been very widespread in these 100 years and takes place in the entire world.
“Therefore the ecumenical movement is truly a movement of prayer," he said.
Cardinal Kasper added today’s Christians are more united as "brothers and sisters in Jesus Christ.”
The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity will be celebrated in Australia from 4-11 May.
