Divorce, illegitimacy rising in Europe

In the European Union today, nearly half of all marriages end in divorce, and one in three children is born out of wedlock, the latest statistics show.

In Belgium alone, 71% of married couples are divorced.

That number is higher in the less religious French-speaking part of the country, while lower in the more conservative Flemish portion.

In Poland, 33% of marriages end in divorce.

Only 18% of married Italians and 17% of married Irish are divorced.

In Germany, the percentage of marriages ending in divorce is higher in the regions that once composed East Germany than in the west.

In 1980, there were 670,000 divorced couples in the European Union.

By 2005, that number had increased to more than 1 million.

In Sweden, 55% of children are born out of wedlock while in France, the number is 45%.

In Great Britain 42% of children are born out of wedlock.

In Poland, the number is 15%.
