Ahead of a June 2 meeting of the Association of Catholic Priests
(ACP) to discuss the introduction of the new translation of the Roman
Missal, Fr Tony Flannery of the association's leadership team has told
The Irish Catholic that some priests will ignore parts of the new text
that they do not approve of.
He said he believes individual priests may informally decide to not
adhere to those parts of the new text with which they are uncomfortable.
Of particular concern to many priests, he said, is the change of the
words of consecration from ''for all'' to ''for many''.
Fr Flannery said
he does not anticipate any formal non-cooperation by the priests'
association per se as, he says, ''the last thing we want is conflict
around the Eucharist''.
Many priests, he said, are ''very unhappy about the quality of the
texts and the way the new translation has been introduced'' as well as
what he described as the ''re-establishment of sexist language''.
However, he said the ACP is ''accepting reality'' as regards the new
Missal and that they have invited the bishops to attend their June
meeting.
