Communion cash to be sacrificed amid downturn

THE First Holy Communion stash, which every child expects to accumulate on their special day, is set to become the latest victim of the recession.

Just 10pc of parents believed that friends and relatives were likely to give more than last year, a new survey, commissioned by EBS, has suggested.

Nearly three times as many (27pc) conceded their child was likely to receive less money than in previous years.

The survey also revealed that eight out of 10 parents believe the recession may have a negative impact on their children's lives.

Around one in six parents (16pc) said they would give €300 or more to a communion child. A further 25pc said they would give more than €50 and less than €100. About 43pc said they would give €50 or less.

While 9pc of children plan to splurge every cent of their communion hoard, 7pc intend to save the whole lot.
