Chaplains concerned by jobs embargo

The effects of the jobs embargo by the Department of Health was a principal discussion point at the 28th annual conference of the National Association of Hospital Chaplains last week.

''A big concern is posts not being filled because of the jobs embargo, and how we can best meet the needs of the people we serve,'' said Margo McKay, the incoming Chairperson.

"We are conscious that chaplains, like all health care professionals are under pressure to do our jobs under an employment embargo."

The three-day conference held in Co Clare under the theme 'Nurturing the Spirit' was opened by Bishop Willie Walsh and the 95 members who attended voted to change their title from hospital chaplains to health care chaplains in order to reflect their work in all types of health care institutions.

Ms McKay said that her aim as incoming chairperson is to spread the chaplaincy message. "We journey with people during a vert anxious time in their lives offering emotional and spiritual support, and I want to get the message out there that we are accessible in these times of need."
