Brothel three metres from Sydney college - despite court order

Although the NSW Land and Environment Court ordered its closure two years ago, a Potts Point brothel continues to trade within three metres of boarding students living at St Vincent's College.

Right next door to a Catholic girls' school is Sydney's most defiant brothel - and there's not a single thing any government, court or community outcry can do to shut it down, the Daily Telegraph says.

A spokeswoman for the Sisters of Charity, which runs St Vincent's, yesterday described the location of the brothel as "disappointing".

"It would be preferable if it were closed," she said.

"The school is very careful to maintain the safety of the girls in making sure this is not the normal route in and out of the college.

"On the other hand the women working there are very protective of the girls. We're more concerned about their clients."

The brothel received consent approval from the now defunct South Sydney Council in 1997 when it was operating as Misty's.

In 2006 Misty's was ordered to close after complaints about violence, intimidation and offensive behaviour. A local resident who did not want to be named said it "was extraordinary" that the brothel continued to operate.

A spokesman for Sydney City Council said Misty's was closed so the owners, De Que Pty Ltd, could no longer operate, and added: "The impact was less after the new owners took it over."
