THE congregation of a Brisbane church believes people power is the key to getting their rebel priest Father Peter Kennedy reinstated.
Father Kennedy of St Mary's in South Brisbane was sacked by Archbishop John Bathersby on February 21, over allegations unorthodox Masses were being practised as well as claims a Buddhist statue was seen in church.
But Father Kennedy has refused to leave and yesterday morning was supported by hundreds of parishioners who arrived at the church for normal service.
One man urged the crowd to write emails and letters to the Vatican.
"I believe if we do they will not be able to ignore you," he said.
Grandfather Peter Schoutens, 66, travelled from Logan after hearing of Father Kennedy's plight.
"I turned my back on Catholicism 50 years ago but word of Father Kennedy's services made me come back.
"I think he's doing the right thing in staying on. It's time the Catholic Church moved on and grew up," he said.
Father Kennedy, who has served in the parish since 1980, said he was delighted to have the backing of the congregation.
"People power is very important," he said.
