More than half of American Catholics believe that homosexuals should get married, a new poll has found.

Among practising Catholics 25 per cent believe in same-sex marriage and a further 38 per cent back a registered partnership.

The survey, conducted by the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion, showed a greater ambivalence on questions of abortion.

Exactly half -- 50 per cent -- of those surveyed Americans said they would vote for a presidential candidate who believes that life begins at the moment of conception.

It was also found that 44 per cent of Catholics attend church on a weekly basis, while another 21 per cent said they attend once or twice a month.
