McDonald’s bows to pressure over gay rights

The US hamburger giant McDonald’s has said it will stop supporting gay rights in the US after a five-month long boycott from groups who say it compromises the family as society's basic unit.

The campaign was launched in March after a prominent representative of the hamburger giant was elected to the Board of the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, NGLCC, an organization working for lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender groups.

The decision aroused strong criticism, and one of the organizations that responded, the American Family Association, AFA, called on its two million members to boycott McDonald’s in protest.

A spokesman said: “We think it is wrong that a company that claims to defend the family make common cause with an organization that is attacking the foundations on which our nation is founded.” Buddy Smith of the AFA said his organisation was opposed to the chain sponsoring gay-parades and donating $20,000 dollars to the NGLCC.

But now McDonald’s has said that it will not be renewing its membership of the NGLCC when it expires in December. The company said in a press release that in the future is neutral: "Our policy is not to support political and social initiatives."

That was a decision that was welcomed by Don Wildmon, Chairman of the American Family Association.

"We appreciate McDonald's decision to no longer support the initiative of activists who want to pursue the issue of homosexuality for their own political purposes."

In response, the AFA has called off its boycott.
