Vatican ordains 48 men as priests

The Rev. Mark Haydu, an Akron native, was among 48 men from the congregation of the Legionaries of Christ ordained to the Roman Catholic priesthood this week in the basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome.

Haydu, 35, was baptized and confirmed at St. Matthew's in Akron. After a year of study at Franciscan University of Steubenville, he served in missions for a year in Guatemala and Mexico. He also studied nursing at the University of Akron.

He entered the religious order in 1993 and began working at the Governor's Office in the Vatican in the Department of the Patrons of the Arts of the Vatican Museums.

The Legionaries of Christ are a Catholic religious congregation founded in 1941 by the Rev. Marcial Maciel Degollado. They carry out educational, missionary and social work in more than 20 countries.

Of the 48 priests ordained Monday, 12 are American-born. Others are from Mexico, Spain,
