Archbishop on burlesque performances: Valletta should not become open-air 'brothel'

Archbishop Charles J. Scicluna has insisted that Valletta’s streets should not be turned into an open-air “brothel” following viral burlesque-style performances in the capital’s streets.

Scicluna addressed the controversy during the programme Għal Kulħadd, after being asked about performances staged near the Franciscan church of Ta’ Ġieżu.

The performances sparked widespread criticism after footage appearing to show women stripping on the church steps circulated on social media.

The Franciscans also condemned the performances, saying similar shows had been taking place in the area for years. Their statement came after Security Minister Glenn Bedingfield said the videos circulating online had been filmed last year and that the performances had since stopped.

While acknowledging that society inevitably evolves, the archbishop stressed that human dignity must remain a value “always and everywhere”, adding that Valletta deserved better than to have its streets transformed into such a spectacle.

“These were not scenes of cultural expression. They bring no honour, and they are no sign of progress,” he said.

Scicluna argued that such entertainment should instead be held indoors, where it would be accessible only to those who freely choose to seek it out.

He concluded by calling on the relevant authorities to investigate such incidents and enforce the law where necessary.
