One day after the immediate dismissal of Freiburg Cathedral's chapel master Boris Böhmann, Archbishop Stephan Burger spoke of the enormous damage caused to everyone involved.
The public disputes within the archdiocese have created a stressful situation, said Burger during a sermon in Freiburg Cathedral on New Year's Eve.
This also applies to him personally.
Burger: time for a new beginning in cathedral music
Following internal disputes and public protests at Christmas, the archdiocese parted ways with its longstanding cathedral choirmaster Boris Böhmann at the beginning of the week.
At the end-of-year service, Burger described the protests against Böhmann's departure as incidents that had also upset and disturbed him.
He did not question the artistic qualities of the cathedral conductor.
The actual motives that led to the dismissal could not be made transparent for legal reasons, Burger added.
Now is the time for a new beginning in cathedral music.
This is an indispensable part of the diocese.
"We need all of you," Burger concluded, addressing the worshippers.
The conflict surrounding Böhmann had been coming to a head for some time.
Most recently, the archbishop only ended the Christmas mass, which was interrupted by protest applause, after a break and after a Catholic television station had interrupted its live broadcast.
