Former dean takes over at Glenstal Abbey

Patrick Hederman, a Benedictine monk and philosopher, took over yesterday as the new leader of Glenstal Abbey at Murrow in Co Limerick.

For almost 40 years, Dom Hederman was headmaster and dean of studies at the Glenstal school run by the Benedictines.

A frequent broadcaster and public speaker, he has been a strong supporter of Gregorian music in the Church's liturgy, and his elevation to the office of abbot coincides with the popularity of a CD and DVD, 'Chant', in which the monks of Glenstal capture the peace and tranquillity of Glenstal Abbey.

The abbatial blessing -- the confirmation of his election -- was imparted to Dom Mark Patrick at a ceremony in Glenstal by Dr Dermot Clifford, the Archbishop of Cashel and Emly.

Archbishop Clifford also presented a history of the Archdiocese to Abbot Hederman.
