10 candidates move forward toward beatification

The Vatican has released a series of decrees advancing the causes of 10 candidates for beatification.

At a January 17 audience with Cardinal Angelo Amato, the prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, Pope Benedict XVI approved the decrees that certify the authenticity of miracles attributed to 5 candidates, who will now be cleared for beatification; and testified to the "heroic virtue" of 5 others, who may now be beatified if a miracle is certified through their intercession.

The candidates for whom a miracle was attested, whose beatifications may now be scheduled, are:

Ciriaco Maria Sancha y Hervas (1833-1909), a Spanish cardinal archbishop of Toledo,

Carlo Gnocchi (1902-1956), an Italian priest,

Bernardo Francisco de Hoyos (1711-1735), a Spanish priest of the Company of Jesus,

Raphael (Louis) Rafiringa (1856-1919), a member of the Institute of Brothers of Christian Schools from Madagascar, and

Eustachio (Joseph) Kugler (1867-1946), a German professed member of the Hospitaller Order of St. John of God.

The candidates whose heroic virtue was declared are:

Juan de Palafox y Mendoz a(1600- 1659), a Spanish bishop,

Robert Spiske (1821-1888), a diocesan priest,

Carolina Beltrami (1869-1932), an Italian religious,

Mary of the Immaculate e Conception (Maria Isabella) Salvat y Romerio (1926-1998), a Spanish religious, and

Liberata Ferrarons y Vives (1803-1842), a Spanish lay woman and third-order Carmelite.
