Ghana's bishops are calling for a partnership agreement with the
Government to be drawn up to safeguard the Church's role in the running
of thousands of mission schools over which it feels it is gradually
losing control.
Bishop Matthew Gyamfi of Sunyani, Episcopal Chairman for Education of
the National Catholic Secretariat, said state-funded Regional Directors
of Education are now responsible for 30 per cent of admissions to the
mission schools.
Bishop Gyamfi said that the Government "does not acknowledge the
important role the Church has played in setting up schools, or that our
schools tend to be the best schools".
He reported that the bishops want
the Government to come up with a clear partnership agreement "to clarify
roles, for without such a document there is confusion".
