108 Cardinal-Electors Remain; Consistory Likely?

With only 108 members of the College of Cardinals now eligible to vote in a papal conclave, Vatican journalists are speculating that Pope Benedict might call a consistory to name new cardinals this year.

On March 31, Cardinal Eduardo Martinez Somalo celebrated his 80th birthday, and thus became ineligible to participate in a papal election.

There are now 184 living cardinals, of whom 76 are above the age of 80.

Among the remaining cardinal-electors, three will celebrate their 80th birthdays in May: Cardinals Laszlo Paskai, the former Archbishop of Budapest (May 8); Franciszek Macharski, the former Archbishop of Krakow (May 20); and Varkey Vithayathil, the Major Archbishop of India's Syro-Malabar Catholic Church (May 29).

Two other cardinals will turn 80 before the end of the year: the American Cardinal Edmund Szoka, former president of the Vatican city-state governate; and Cardinal Angelo Sodano, the former Secretary of State and dean of the College of Cardinals.
