Prof Conway is attached to the Tuam diocese but works as head of theology and religious studies at Mary Immaculate College.
Widely-published as a theologian, Prof Conway’s areas of expertise include Catholic education and secularisation.
And the challenges presented by secularisation, technology and modernity are among the issues being examined at the 13th Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops, meeting in Rome in October and to which Prof Conway has been appointed an expert advisor.
“I am deeply honoured to have been invited by the Holy See to participate in this very important event in the life of the universal Church,” Fr Conway said.
Mary Immaculate president Prof Michael Hayes added that the invite brought great prestige to the college.
“I am delighted that a member of staff from Mary Immaculate College has been invited to participate” in the synod, he said. “This is both an honour for Prof Conway and for the college.”
Further Irish representation at the synod comes in the shape of Dublin’s Archbishop Diarmuid Martin and Bishop Kieran O’Reilly of the Diocese of Killaloe.
