Zimbabwe: Protestant cleric petitions for excommunication of Mugabe

Image result for Pastor Phillip MugadzaA Protestant minister in Zimbabwe has delivered a formal petition to the Vatican asking for the excommunication of President Robert Mugabe, citing the destruction of the country’s economy under the autocratic leader’s rule.

Pastor Phillip Mugadza, who has been an outspoken critic of Mugabe, delivered his petition to the offices of the apostolic nuncio in Zimbabwe.

He said that the Church should take action because Mugabe’s leadership has left the country’s people in abject poverty.

In July, the Catholic bishops’ conference of Zimbabwe joined with other Christian organizations in a public warning that the country faced “total collapse” because of the “rampant corruption and high levels of unaccountability and impunity” in the government.
