British bishop to appeal against conviction for Holocaust denial

AN ultra-conservative Roman Catholic British bishop is to appeal against his conviction for denying the Holocaust to a court in Germany.

Germany’s DAPD news agency reported yesterday that a Regensburg court spokesman said an appeal hearing had been set for November 29.

Bishop Richard Williamson was convicted and fined €10,000 in Regensburg in April.

He was found guilty of incitement for saying in a 2008 interview with Swedish television – conducted near Regensburg – that he did not believe Jews were killed in gas chambers during World War II.

The bishop was barred by his order from attending the April proceedings or making statements to the media.
