The Vatican’s Secretary for Relations with States has again called
upon the international community to seek a diplomatic solution to Syrian
civil war.
“Although in recent weeks there have been positive developments with
regard to the thorny issue of chemical weapons, it should be noted that
it is only one aspect of the entire problem,” Archbishop Dominique
Mamberti said in an interview with the Italian Catholic news agency SIR.
“Violent clashes continue to sow death and destruction, and the already
unendurable humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate,” he added.
“Predictions indicate that by the end of the year half of the Syrian
population will need humanitarian assistance.”
A diplomatic solution, said Archbishop Mamberti, should ensure that
Syria is not partitioned and that the rights of all citizens, including
Christians, are respected.
