Nigel Stock, the Bishop of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich, will join the archbishop's staff as Bishop at Lambeth in October.

Archbishop Justin Welby has revived the position, which was not used by his predecessor, Lord (Rowan) Williams.

Bishop Stock, 63, will take charge of domestic policy and will be responsible for organising the archbishop's work in the General Synod and the Archbishops' Council.

He will also be the main point of contact for bishops. He had been chairman of the working group appointed to fast-track legislation for women bishops.

The archbishop's Chief of Staff Chris Smith will be replaced by Kay Brock, secretary for Public Affairs and Deputy Chief of Staff.
