The Education Secretary Michael Gove has admitted the quality of RE
teaching in England's state schools has "suffered" as a result of the
Government's education reforms.
Michael Gove said he had not done enough to protect the subject
within schools during the past three years and that he is "anxious" to
work with the Catholic Church and the Church of England to raise
standards.
Addressing a Church of England education seminar last Wednesday, he
said he had believed the subject's compulsory status on the curriculum
until the age of 16 would be sufficient to protect it, but admitted he
"had not done enough", according to The Telegraph.
Research has shown that a number of schools have cut resources for RE
teaching at GCSE level following its exclusion from the English
Baccalaureate.
