Venezuela recalls ambassador to the Vatican for consultations

Iván Rincón Urdaneta, Venezuela's Ambassador to the Vatican, was recalled by his government.

The former president of the Supreme Tribunal of Justice (TSJ) is to arrive in Venezuela on Friday, sources of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported.

The arrival of Rincón will be less than 48 hours after President Hugo Chávez ordered Foreign Minister Nicolás Maduro to review the Concordat signed in 1964, which regulates relations between the Vatican and Venezuela, due to the criticisms made by members of the Venezuelan Bishops' Conference.

Meanwhile, the National Assembly (AN) officially summoned Jorge Cardinal Urosa Savino to appear in the AN Coordinating Committee in order to express his opinion on the government of President Hugo Chávez and produce evidence of the charges made against the Head of State.

The speaker of the National Assembly, Deputy Cilia Flores, subpoenaed the Caracas archbishop for next Tuesday, July 20, at 11:00 a.m., at the Federal Legislative Palace, the state-run news agency AVN reported.
