Ballybunion parish priest criticises vandalism

The parish priest of one of Ireland's most popular holiday resorts has criticised mindless vandals who vandalised a tomb in the town dedicated to the memory of a former parish priest.

Speaking on RTÉ's Liveline programme the parish priest of Ballybunion in County Kerry Fr Martin Hegarty criticised vandals who drove a jeep at high speed into the tomb of the very popular Canon Michael Fuller who was parish priest there from 1914 to 1936.

The tomb is located near St John's church in the coastal town and Fr Hegarty claimed that other memorial plaques to priests nearby were not targeted.

Gardaí are continuing to investigate the incident that has been dubbed 'Monday night madness' by locals.

According to Fr Hegarty local Gardaí told him that a Jeep that had been stolen from a local family was later found burned out in Limerick city and debris on it matched the Ballybunion monument.

Fr Hegarty also claimed that the monument would be restored depending on the cost.

“If the cost is prohibitive then a new monument will be put there.” he said.
