Pope praises 'inspirational' Northern Ireland

Pope Benedict has said Northern Ireland should be an inspiration to those around the world seeking peace.

The Pontiff made the comment when he received Ireland's new ambassador to the Holy See, Noel Fahey, at the papal summer residence in Castel Gandolfo.

He said the North had shown that 'conflict, no matter how ingrained, can be overcome'.

Pope Benedict also said that peace in the North had come about through widespread international support, determined political resolve on the part of both the Irish and British governments, and the readiness of communities and individuals to forgive.
