Two churchmen honoured for NI roles

Two churchmen from Northern Ireland were honoured for their contribution to the peace process.

Fr Alec Reid and Rev Harold Good received honorary doctorates at a graduation ceremony in the University of Ulster yesterday, in recognition of the roles they played during the decommissioning of IRA weapons.

Harry Gregg, who survived the Manchester United Munich air disaster, was also honoured by the University of Ulster.

The former Northern Ireland and Busby Babes goalkeeper repeatedly went back into the crashed plane to rescue passengers. He received the degree of Doctor of the University in recognition of his services to football.

The 75-year-old was brought up in Coleraine, Co Derry, and still lives within a few miles of the university town.

Others honoured include Nuala O'Loan, former Police Ombudsman for Northern Ireland, and writer Colm Tóibín.
