Mass rejig for papal service

CATHOLIC priests have been asked to reschedule morning Masses during World Youth Day so parishioners and priests can attend a huge service at Randwick to be celebrated by Pope Benedict XVI.

The Pope will be celebrating a morning Mass on the final day of the World Youth Day celebrations on Sunday, July 20.

A letter, signed by the Archbishop of Sydney, Cardinal George Pell, Bishop of Parramatta Kevin Manning, Bishop of Broken Bay David Walker and Bishop Peter Ingham of Wollongong, has been sent to parish priests in the four Catholic dioceses in metropolitan Sydney detailing the request.

The papal Mass is expected to draw up to 500,000 people to Randwick Racecourse and Centennial Parklands.

"We ask you to consider scheduling additional Masses on the evenings of Saturday, July 19 and Sunday, July 20 for those who prefer to attend Mass in the parish, and otherwise encourage all your parishioners to attend the final Mass with the Holy Father."
