Bishop questions appointment of new Vatican envoy

Archbishop Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales said they were not consulted over the appointment of Cristina Ponce-Enrile as the new ambassador to Vatican.

Rosales explained that although the church has no authority to appoint diplomatic representative, it is important that their voice was acquired since it involves the selection of the representative to the Holy See.

Enrile replaced Leonida Vera, who resigned from her post with no definite reason.

Rosales added that asking recommendations or comments from the church regarding the appointment would not cause so much from the government.

Officials and members of the influential Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) were shaken over Vera's resignation, as they were only informed through a letter sent to them during their plenary assembly in January.

Enrile is the estranged wife of Senator Juan Ponce Enrile, who is a known supporter of the present government.
