Uganda: Archbishop Lwanga Invites Pope to Country

POPE Benedict may visit Uganda on the invitation of Kampala Archbishop, the Rt. Rev. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga.

"I asked his holiness the Pope to visit Uganda because we love him very much. He told me that God-willing, he will visit us," he told journalists at Entebbe airport, a few minutes after he returned from Rome yesterday.

The date for the Pontiff's visit is, however, not yet fixed. Lwanga and 46 other archbishops received the pallium from the Pope at the Basilica on Friday.

Lwanga explained that the pallium was of spiritual and administrative importance because it links an archdiocese to the Vatican.

Five other archbishops, including that of Tororo Archdiocese, the Rt. Rev. Dennis Kiwanuka Lote, received the pallium from their respective archdioceses because they did not travel to Rome.

Since he has received the pallium, Lwanga will preside over all functions, including the consecration of bishops.

He now has the authority to ordain Fr. Emmanuel Obbo, who was recently appointed bishop of Soroti Diocese.

Obbo, who will replace Bishop Erasmus Wandera, will be ordained in three months' time, according to Lwanga.

Lwanga said his delegation interacted with the Pope and celebrated a mass at the Uganda Martyrs Church in Rome.

He commended the Ugandan Catholics in Rome for their hospitality.

The archbishop revealed that he also established fraternal relations with archbishops from different archdioceses worldwide. "I also attended the 2000th birth anniversary of St. Paul."

A delegation led by Kampala Archdiocese Vicar General, Msgr. Paul Ssemwogerere, welcomed Lwanga at Entebbe.

Students of St. Kizito Secondary School Katikamu and those of St. Mary's High School Migadde sung and danced for the archbishop.

By press time, Lwanga was slated to preside over a service at Rubaga Cathedral where he would officially wear the pallium.
